Annual Conference

Takes place every October (dates and locations vary)

Each fall hundreds of local government officials, speakers and member organization representatives attend the VML Annual Conference.

The conference includes:

• General sessions featuring political leaders, nationally-known speakers and local government experts.
• Workshop sessions on a variety of local government issues.
• Business meeting focusing on the adoption of the annual VML legislative program and the election of officers for the upcoming year.
• The presentation of the annual Innovation Awards recognizing excellence in local government programs.
• The opportunity for networking with colleagues from across the state.

Mayors Institute

Takes place every October (in conjunction with the Annual Conference)

Learn how you can meet the needs of a new generation of citizens at the Virginia Mayors Institute. Each year, the program explores issues essential to the responsibilities of mayors and vice mayors as local government leaders.

Local Government Day

Takes place in Richmond at the mid-point of each General Assembly session

The Virginia Municipal League invites its members to the VML Local Government Day. This is the day when all cities, towns and counties come together and advocate on behalf of our communities.

Elected Officials Conference

Takes place twice yearly (winter and summer)

The Elected Officials Conference is a valuable training and networking opportunity for newly elected and veteran local officials from across the Commonwealth. This in-person event is offered to local officials and staff from VML member localities.

Small Towns Conference

Takes place in the summer (dates and location varies)

Inaugurated in 2024, the  Small Towns Conference provides an overview of topics related to local government management specifically geared towards small town issues. This conference invites elected officials including council members and mayors, town managers, leadership staff to learn, network, and share resources and ideas.
